The Economics of Drain Tile: What Landowners Should Know
Why Drain Tile Pays Off:
- Improved Yields: Better drainage reduces saturated soils, allowing earlier planting, stronger root systems, less compaction, and more timely fieldwork.
- Higher Land Value: Tiled acres often command a premium when sold, anywhere from $500- $1,000+ per acre.
- More Consistent Cash Flow: Tiled land is more appealing to tenants and may allow for higher and more stable rental income.
What It Costs:
- Installation typically ranges from $800–$1,500 per acre; depending on pipe spacing, outlet accessibility, contractor availability and terrain and soil conditions.
Tips Before You Tile:
- Have a professional drainage plan designed.
- Talk with your tenant, they will know where the farm needs tile!
- Document everything—maps, invoices, and before/after photos, to boost resale value.
